DECEMBER 12 – LIVE THE DREAM

Then, Jesus said privately to his followers, “You are so blessed to be able to see all of this! I want you to realize that the prophets and kings would have loved to see and hear and experience the life you are being given” (Luke 10:23-24)

                   How often do you complain? Do you get up some mornings thinking of the challenges of the day with anxiety or even dread? Or, do you understand that every moment of your life is an opportunity to watch and participate in the great work that God is doing in His world and His people? Are you living the dream or the drudgery?

                   Jesus has just celebrated the return of the seventy-two people He commissioned to go ahead of Him. He had challenged them, sent them, heard the stories of God’s work through their lives. Then, He thank God “full of joy through the Holy Spirit (verse 21).” This was a big deal for Jesus! He was excited. So, He made the effort to get his people to stop and take note; to celebrate their great fortune. They had been chosen by God to be part of His work to change lives. You have been chosen too! Celebrate that great opportunity every day.

                   See your great fortune through Jesus’ eyes. Relish the opportunity you have been given to live God’s dream life for you.

DECEMBER 6 – GOODNESS

And Jesus said, “Why do you say that I am good? No one; nothing except for the Lord, God is good (excellent, virtuous, principled…).” (Mark 10:18)

                   What is your standard for excellence in attitude, thought, and behavior? Do you have a list? Have you worked hard to assemble a self-created code of laws to govern your own conduct and that of your people? If so, you are settling for something that is less than ideal.

                   Jesus is here answering the question, “What must I do to become an heir to the life God offers?” This statement is Jesus’ summary of that answer. He continued with a reference to God’s law and challenged His questioner. Finally, Jesus observed the hopeless condition of a person who thinks he or she can find real life, meaning, and purpose – either here on earth, or eternally – apart from relationship with the living, virtuous God who truly is good. The Lord, God has values. He has a framework designed specifically for your life, and for the life of each of your people. Your list of rules is not adequate to govern you, much less will those rules be enough for the unique, diverse people you will lead. Your words and actions must encourage them to find relationship with Jesus if you are to help them prosper.

                   Don’t settle for human goodness. Put all your hope in the Lord’s complete goodness.

DECEMBER 2 – WHY UNUSUAL JOY?

Think of it as joy; be glad brothers, when you find yourself in very tough situations. You can be sure that this test of your faith will build your ability to patiently endure. These trials work to bring you to maturity, sound and complete in every way. So, keep going until God brings you to completion. (James 1:2-4)

                   It is very important for you to have a strong command of the values framework that God is giving you. Words, especially words that describe values, are often viewed differently – sometimes with great emotion attached - by different people. People often define words differently too. So, it is very important that you clearly state, define, and live your values without the confusion of mixed messages.

                   James’ value of being joyful in tough situations is not one most people would choose these days. Some psychologists say everything people do is motivated by a desire to avoid such pain. See how James painted the picture for his reader to help them understand his ‘Why?’ The ‘why?’ is very important when you are arguing for a value that goes against another person’s perceptions.

                   Consider your values and their definition in view of how they will be received by your people. Recognize that your actions and policy can be an important part of defining them. And, don’t forget to tell your people the ‘why?’ of your values

NOVEMBER 30 – POSITIVE MEASURES

Finally - my family - let transparency, integrity, innocent holiness, purity, gratitude, and kindness consume your thoughts and inform your hearts. Project your desire to be an excellent servant. (Philippians 4:8)

                   Paul was given vision by God. He saw a future where many people would decide to follow Jesus. His words before and after this passage (vv. 4-9) describe these followers living life on God’s terms. Moreover, Paul was able to tell these people, his people in Philippi, to emulate his actions, and to do the things he had encouraged them to do because he had consistently pursued that vision. Note that all these admonitions are stated in positive terms.

                   Do you focus your efforts on pursuing the vision God has given you? Do you lead your people in a positive way toward pursuing that vision in unity together? This is not to suggest that you should ignore difficult or negative circumstances. However, your focus should be primarily on the positive ends that you pursue. Paul said elsewhere in this letter, “I am pursuing the goal so that I can accomplish what God has called me to do in Christ Jesus.”

                   Pursue the goal (vision) God has called you to accomplish. Point your people toward that goal with positive encouragement.

NOVEMBER 22 – DECEIVERS NEED A REASON

(God’s plan to make us different) is so there will not be splits and battles among you; so that you will each be concerned about the other person because their contribution is so important to the group’s welfare. (1Corinthians 12:25)

                   Do you see others in your group as valuable, unique partners in pursuing God’s vision? Do you remind your people often that each person, you included, is dependent upon the others for the prosperity of the whole? Or, do you believe you, or another leader, are more important than the rest, and so foster fear and selfishness among your people? If you help your people see relationships from God’s perspective, you will prepare them to thrive as a group.

                   In Paul’s time, as today, the default attitude for everyday people was to see other people as rivals, competitors for vital resources, and as enemies. Paul’s explanation that the Lord designed us to be mutually dependent and cooperative was – and is – exactly the opposite of the world’s expert opinions. This world’s dog-eat-dog existence gives opportunity for a person to rationalize almost any behavior under a mistaken idea that their self-preservation demands an extraordinary action. That’s how thieves bring themselves to steal and murderers to kill. In God’s world, people see abundance, but here in this world there is never enough to go around.

                   Lead your people to embrace the unity and trust in God that dispels fear and prevents a selfish perspective.

NOVEMBER 6 – GOD’S ENDS ARE SIGNIFICANT

So, don’t worry about what you’ll be eating and drinking, and the style of your stuff. People who don’t know God are consumed by these things. For your father, God, these are details – He knows your needs. Invest your attention on the Lord and His work. You’ll find that you have what you need. (Matthew 6:31-33)

                   Have you noticed that God has chosen to do things differently? In this world, negotiation is important. Therefore, most business communication is cloaked in and hindered by the pretense that masks selfish motives. Will you be like those people whose every word; every action is carefully calculated and crafted for personal advantage? Or will you focus your attention on the needs of others, trusting Christ to provide what you need?

                   Here, Jesus explains that in God’s Kingdom economy, there is provision rather than a need for constant negotiation. Real trust in a faithful God allows you to live freely. Your changed life will then become one of the Lord’s signs for others. You will become one of the living words of God’s sign language that speaks hope to the men and women you encounter.

                   Very few of the things of this world are significant. Each of those things is found in Christ. Focus on Him so you will always be about significant pursuits.

NOVEMBER 1 – LIFE ACCOUNTING 102

(Love) can patiently, quietly continue no matter what happens. It extends trust, believing each promise and every promise. It hopes fully in every respect (in God’s promises), so it may endure anything. Love never fails! (I Corinthians 13:7)

                   The thing about investments is that you generally want to build for the long-term. What is the asset that you want to “quietly continue” to grow during your lifetime? Jesus said the new command is to “love one another (John 13:14).” If that’s the work, the related asset certainly is human relationships. So, the equation for building that long-term value would be:

Rich Relationships = My Love + My Trust + My Hope

                   Paul begins with love, but he is telling his people at Corinth that the enduring work comes down to faith (trust), hope, and love (I Corinthians 13:13). With the love that is motivated by God’s love, made bold by a firm trust, and centered on a secure hope, you will have courage to risk investment in other people. Only then, will you be able to extend love and trust in a way that the world can’t understand, and fix your focus on your hope for the other person’s future. That kind of love is what makes for a rich relationship with another.

                   Trust the Lord today. Endure; persevere when life gets hard. Love, even when others don’t love you back. Let God’s love that never fails work through your life.

OCTOBER 30 – RULE PROBLEMS – A BIG IDEA

And after the great trembling, there was a great fire – God still was not in this. But, after the fire there came a still, small voice. When Elijah heard the voice, he wrapped his face and went out to the entrance. Suddenly the voice challenged him, “What are you doing, Elijah?” (I Kings 19:12-13)

                   Leaders often are attracted to BIG ideas. Often, this is even motivated by desire to have a big impact for the Lord. The world generally says, “bigger is better, stronger, and more important!” There are at least two big problems with this idea. First, strategic planning often requires looking long-term, and trying to predict the end from the beginning. That’s dangerous territory if you have only been given the first, or next, step by God. Also, God has a habit of acting in unexpected, and often small, ways.

                   This verse also presents two things to consider. Elijah waited to hear from God. He was not distracted by the big things going on around him. The fire, earthquake, nor any other major world events really got his attention. But, when God spoke, he was there. Second, Elijah must have been familiar with that voice. People used by the Lord in the stories of the Bible consistently shared these characteristics.

                   Look for God in everything big or small. Listen until you hear His voice, instead of being pulled to the things that others pursue as big or important.

OCTOBER 21 – BECOMING WHAT YOU LOVE

Even though people knew God, they turned inward, foolishly claiming to know best for themselves instead of worshipping and glorifying the Lord, God. They gave up aspiring to God and His glory, choosing instead the common things He created. (Romans1:21)

                   Men and women are very good at achieving what they really want most in life. You are always living toward a future, a goal, an end. What is yours? You must be careful to choose this end with serious intent. Recognizing the truth of this passage; that your efforts are animated by your habits that in turn come from what you really want, you should focus intently on God’s vision for your life. You should also be careful to consistently focus your people on God and the work God has given you all to do together.

                  As Paul was describing the choices these folks made, he must have scratched his head. “They know better,” is his real observation here. As he wondered why others (and he, himself at times) would do such a foolish thing, he must have remembered Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart, so he is.” Against their own interests, these people chose to cling tightly to all the lesser things provided by the world; the latest shiny object, rather than pursuing God and His true worth and glory.

                   Be careful. Lead your people to a carefully considered decision to pursue God, so they will become the image bearers He wants them to be.

OCTOBER 20 – BETTER WORK

…to rule… (Genesis 1:26)

We beg you – Christ wants us to do this for Him – please be reconciled to Him, so that (as God intended) we will all participate in His rule again! (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)

                   Is your work supposed to be hard? Is it supposed to leave you mentally and spiritually exhausted, discouraged, and stressed out? God’s word is clear about when you will find work to be a burden all these ways, and when it will not be so. It is a choice you make each moment. Will you do the work of the world that is filled with stress and exhaustion? Or, will you do the work of God that brings peace and joy?

                   Both in God’s original creative intent, and in the work of reconciliation Paul describes, God has a plan for you to enjoy better work than this world can ever offer you. Participating in His rule, while in unity with God’s Holy Spirit is that better work. Because of the penalty for man’s rebellion (Genesis 3:17), this world’s work is hard, toilsome, and causes much pain. But, Paul (here), and Jesus (Matthew 11:29-30) invite you and your people to come to Jesus to be re-created, and once again to participate in God’s ruling work – which is the work of renewal and recreation.

                   Don’t spend your time, effort, energy, and focus trying to tame the world’s work. It won’t change. You and your people can change your choices though. Lead your people to join you as you pursue the better work God offers.

OCTOBER 11 – TEACH THE OLD WAYS

Christ has one Body and one Spirit, just as each of you was called to the very same hope and faith. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. He is over everything, through everything, and in everything. (Ephesians 4:4-6)

                   Do you value each of the ways that the Lord has given you to relate to Him? As your people grow and come to be receptive to the Lord, do you introduce them to these opportunities? The old ways; loving relationship with God, prayer, listening for His voice, reading Scripture as you pray, fasting, and worshipping, are all valuable gifts from God. They will enrich your life and the lives of all your people who practice them.

                   Paul explains there is one way – God. Even as you recognize that people are unique, they are the same in at least two ways. First, each is created by God, and is accountable to Him. God is God over every person and activity. Second, He is “in everything.” This means He has made Himself available to each person.

   Sometimes you want to be relevant, or current, and you may look for new methods. God may lead you to them. But, don’t abandon the old ways He has given you. These ancient paths to relationship with God hold great value for you and your people.

OCTOBER 2 – CELEBRATE - GROW AWARENESS

Sing, show delight, and great joy all who belong to the Lord, God. It is right for you to praise God for what He does. Praise Him using every instrument. Sing with your voice and heart your gratitude for all the new work He does. Give it your best! (Psalm 33:1-3)

                   As you notice the work God is doing in and around you, there is opportunity to help your people share in the celebration you lead to recognize God’s prosperity. Think of the many ways you can provide evidence of Jesus’ work, and call attention to Him as well as the culture He is calling you all to inhabit. You will be teaching them the patterns of worship each time you speak, “We celebrate!”

                   Here, the Psalmist says, “It is right for you to praise God for what He does.” He encourages a full-throated celebration – loud with lots of instruments and joyful gratitude. The encouragement to give it your best, and to be grateful for everything - all of what the Lord does - eliminates any doubt about the importance of this celebration. Clearly, your voice is critical to God’s plan for you and your people.

                   Celebrate loudly, publicly, and give it your best. Bring awareness to God’s purposes and His work in and through your people!

SEPTEMBER 25 – CAST THE PLAY

If the house is big enough, there will be containers that are made of gold and silver, but some will be made of wood and clay, and some to work that brings great good, and some shame. If a person will stay away from such dishonor, he or she can be used for good purpose, set aside for profitable work for the Lord; remembering He prepared the work.      (2 Timothy 2:20-21)

                   Have you ever considered your work to be like that of a casting director; one who finds the appropriate role for each “actor” in your community? As you lead your people, God will help you to see each individual with His discernment. But, to do this, you must insure that each person has a relationship with you or one of your leaders who can relate to God in that discernment. Are your people being led by someone with a gold standard? If not, are you moving toward that reality each day?

                   Paul explains to Timothy the importance of carefully considering the nature and character of each person around him. He encourages Timothy to go for the gold, and further explains that he must understand that each person must strive for a right relationship with God if he or she will be used for God’s purposes in His ongoing story.

                   Prayerfully consider your people’s actions. Encourage each one to pursue the things of God so they too may be part of God’s “play.” Help those who struggle with the things that lead to shame and dishonor to overcome those things.

SEPTEMBER 21-FOLLOW EVEN WHEN IT'S HARD

Hear me when I (Jesus) tell you (Peter) this. When you were younger, before you met and began following Me, you made the plans, you prepared, and then you did life your way. As you grow to completeness in Me, you will simply stretch out your hands and reach for Me, and you will willingly go wherever I lead – even though you don’t want to go where I’ll take you. (John 21:18)

                   Peter experienced a very challenging three years with Jesus. It was marked by soaring highs and dramatic lows, as he always seemed to be one of the more serious, passionate disciples. This passage immediately follows an exchange between Jesus and Peter where Jesus allowed him to both be restored in close personal relationship, and to gain new understanding for his way forward.

                   Do you struggle against this expectation of Jesus? Do you think of great plans; big projects you can do to make up for the times you may have failed Jesus? You must understand, these desires, without the kind of complete submission Jesus describes to Peter, will lead you down the broad way of destruction. Hear Jesus tell you today, “Your work is to feed My sheep; love my people. Just stretch out your hands and let me show you the way, even if that way doesn’t make sense to you.”

                   Learn the truth of following Jesus. Understand and accept that it means you give up control. Trust the way Jesus shows you, even when you don’t understand.

SEPTEMBER 20-FOLLOW-BEING LED IS DYING

After Jesus received the vinegar, He said, “It has been completed;” then bowed His head and released His spirit. (John 19:30)

                   How often do you say, or allow others to say about you, (or at least feel – inside) that, “you deserve ___” (some benefit or honor or recognition)? The ultimate work of Jesus was to die. Do you understand that He was saying that your work is to be the same?

                   Earlier in the book of John, Jesus is speaking with His disciples (John 12:23-27). He explained that neither He nor they could be faithful to God the Father, and His purpose for them, unless they were willing to give up any claim they have upon even their own lives. People whose expectation for their life is that they will live it as if they are already dead to what they want or need, do not feel they deserve anything beyond that death. The language was much more direct in the book of Mark (8:34). There, Jesus said explicitly that His follower must, “deny himself and take up their cross.” Your desires to get what you have earned by your good works or your faithfulness must die if you wish to follow Jesus faithfully.

                   Refuse to feel entitled and die to your selfish desires so that Jesus can use you to bring others to new life in Him.

SEPTEMBER 1 – THE DIFFERENCE

So, let your Lord God show you the way that is best for them; just as He does for you. And, help your brother and sister to find that best for themselves. This is such a difficult, unusual choice for you to make in this world. Many will start; but they will fail. The way to God ‘s life is hard. (Matthew 7:12-14)

                   There are so many ways to get it wrong as a leader. There are many who will advise you to choose those false paths. Often, they will seem to you to be the right, fair choice. Will you make the only choice that will make all the difference for your people? Only one path will take you and your people to the transformed life that Jesus offers.

                   During this lesson, Jesus explains that often His way will be different from the world’s angry, combative, selfish way of dealing with other people. He gave a couple of very clear examples, pointing His listeners to the all-knowing, loving counsel of the Father as the proper source for each and all a believer’s needs. Many have read this passage as instruction to reason what is best for the other person, and then convince that person to accept their opinion. That’s not the narrow-door path Jesus urges. The narrow way is to recognize that only the Father has the right answer for each of His children. The narrow way is to listen for the Spirit to reveal how to point the other person to Him.

                   Choose the different way. Help your people find their way to God and His very best for them. Don’t try to take God’s place in their lives.

AUGUST 26 – STUCK IN THE MIDDLE

From there (Shechem), Abram broke camp and moved to a mountain east of Beth-El. He set up his home and there built an altar to the Lord, God between Beth-El and Hai to the east. There he preached in the name of God. (Genesis 12:8)

                   Which is more important to you; living and working, resting and waiting, or giving God praise in worship? If you are going to lead your people effectively; God’s way, your answer must be, “Yes. All of the above.”

                   Understanding that Bethel symbolizes communion with God, and that Ai is symbolic of the world, may help you understand the importance of this event in Abram’s life. As God led him to live there, He reminded Abram that He must always be influenced by both the time he spent meditating and waiting for the Lord’s word, and by the events of the world where he lived and worked. The altar reminded him to always worship and give thanks, whatever his circumstances with God and with people.

                   You are in that place as well. Each of your decisions and actions will be determined in this same, complex environment. Live embracing all God gives you as you are between Him and His world. Worship Him there.

AUGUST 22 – SHARE EXCELLENCE

While they were struggling in troubles and pain, their joy overcame that trial, just like their excellent giving overcame their poverty. I can tell you – they did their very best, and even more; without anyone asking. (2 Corinthians 8:2-3)

                   Do you expect excellence? For each person, the definition of excellence is the same. In every task, large or small, the standard of excellence is that you do your best. Will you adopt that standard for yourself and your people?

                   Paul here tells the story of the Macedonians, who gave generously at a time many people would be selfish and uncaring. They themselves were poor, and they had been suffering through unusually difficult circumstances. However, these people managed to keep their focus on others, loving to the point that it cost them. They did their best. Their actions were excellent, simply because it was what they should do. And, as this group gave, Paul notes that their sorrow became joy. Giving from their poverty in obedience to God’s call to do their best brought the real prosperity of His joy.

                   Lead your people to prosperous excellence. Establish excellence as their standard, and yours.
