NOVEMBER 2 – THE PARADOX

For our God so much wanted His people to return to His love that He put His Son – the only, unique Son of God – in their place. So, if they will invest all their trust in Him, they won’t be dead, but will be restored to life – real life. (John 3:16)
One of the problems associated with Jesus’ new way of accounting for life is that it is different; especially in a place of work. You are familiar with how to establish rules and penalties; use carrots and sticks. But, how do you “do relationship” in that world? In the work world, it is all about what you and other people do – how they perform. In this new economy of faith in Christ, it is about what you allow Christ to do through you. As you live the story He has written for your life, the vision and the values Jesus has given you become a story of your sacrifice for others. The less you do on your own, the more success.

That’s how Jesus lived thousands of years ago. He went to the people to whom the Father sent Him. The Son of God used each moment of His life to live out His story as the Father showed Him (John 5:19). If you will follow that path, giving your life, this scripture explains you will be raised to spiritual life just as Jesus was resurrected after giving His physical life.

Let your life be a daily invitation for others to find that real life too.

OCTOBER 31 – LIFE ACCOUNTING 101

Each one decides how to invest their own life… Those who just exist for their own purposes worry all the time about material things. But, those who really live, live according to the Holy Spirit of the Lord. (Romans 8:5-6)

When you read Paul’s self-descriptions, you never see him mention that he was an accountant. But in this letter, he talks about how to affect the value of a person’s investment. Maybe it’s because, as a businessman, he understands the profit and loss statement. His equation for how to profit was this:
The Work of the Spirit – Himself = God’s Prosperity
For him, the way to prosper was to stop going after what he wanted and his own prosperity. Interesting formula.

Can you use this as a rule of thumb for life? When you find that you are pursuing some selfish purpose or gain, might that prompt you to stop and consider if that behavior is in your best interests? If Paul’s equation is right, the word of God is to be valued as the source for a life that gives you the chance to really live. This must have been the abundant life about which Jesus spoke (John 10:10).

Decide today that you will invest your life only in the work that God gives you. Let God’s love that never fails work in you, and find His prosperous, abundant life.

OCTOBER 25 – RULE PROBLEM – EXCLUSION

Here’s a new rule for you. This will be your rule. Each one of you must love the others, just like I have loved you. Love one another! (John 13:34)
Is it practical to have simple rules and to be inclusive? In the real world, where you and your people do business, can you follow this command of Jesus? In this world, where the extension of trust is rare, rules are often used to limit risk. The costs of complying and of documenting that compliance are usually passed along to some faceless user downstream, and they’re justified as necessary to protect the public. In this world there is a material benefit (an incentive) to being part of the group that writes and follows all the rules because that group decides who will be excluded.

Jesus provides a different way for those who follow Him. He says, “love without limit.” (Just as I have loved you). He says, “love fully!” There is no condition in the encouragement to simply, inclusively, “love one another!” Following this regulation may mean that you must follow many of the world’s rules to be able to love that other person. Obeying Jesus may also mean you must break a rule sometimes.  But, the guidance you give your people – your rules should never be designed to exclude others from your love.

Your role – the new rule – is simply to love.

OCTOBER 18 – YOUR PRODUCT IS PEOPLE

The Lord, God said, “Let us make men and women…” (Genesis 1:26)
In the Genesis 1 account of God’s creation, we learn that He spoke light into existence, He made things, He set things in place and into motion. Further, God allowed things to happen. He blessed, and He saw that the things He created were good. In this verse, the Lord God said, “Let us make men and women.” John begins his story (John 1:1-4) by explaining that Jesus was present and creating all that was made. The Holy Spirit too was there (Genesis 1:2). God used the singular as His Spirit hovered over the waters. What then, is the significance of a sudden change to “us” when He created men and women?
As God is omniscient, he knew, and He must have thought about the great role that he would allow you to have in the birth/creation of men and women – both physically and in their spiritual re-birth. From this – the very beginning – the Creator God knew you would have a part in making men and women. Do you understand? Whatever you make or sell or build, repair or manage – from God’s perspective - your product is people!!! Your work, as Jesus commissions you (Matthew 28:19-20), is to be God’s mission in His world to redeem His people and restore them to relationship with Himself.

Your product is people. Focus on that work. Never settle for less than God’s missions for you.

OCTOBER 14 – PRACTICING TEACHES

And the Lord, God says, “These people have learned the right words to say, but their hearts; their wills, are far from me. What they call worship is just repeating words men have given them to say. They are mere lip service. (Isaiah 29:13)

Do you create training opportunities that move the values you teach into the real world? Do you mentor others in a way that coaches your people to consider how the values can and should inform their decisions and actions? Do you celebrate when you see good values-based work, emphasizing the importance of those values to the long-term success of individuals and the whole community?

When Jesus commissioned twelve of His followers to work in various communities during His time here (Luke 9:1-6), He showed His expectation for followers. Worship is doing what God desires rather than, as Isaiah says, simply repeating God’s words. Words inform. Practicing teaches. Talking about Christ is helpful. Putting on Christ by doing the work He gives you will teach you, and others, about His love in ways that will lead them to Him. This practice will also bring you closer to the reality of living fully in relationship with Jesus.

Lead your people to practice the values in every possible application. Immerse them in the work.

OCTOBER 1 – COMMUNITIES CELEBRATE

The Lord, God took this man Adam, and He placed him at rest in the place that would be his workplace, Eden’s garden, so that he could work it and make it be what God had planned for it to become. (Genesis 2:15)
Do you see your work each day as worship? Do you celebrate what the Lord, God is doing through you and your people? If you do this; working as God’s word tells you is His way for you to live, you’ll find that even the smallest details of your work will have real and lasting meaning.

Adam was placed in the garden with a specific purpose. He and his work were an essential part of God’s plan for the world He had created, and for mankind. Notice too, the work was to be such that he could rest in it. God’s plan was to do the work that would accomplish His plan in and through Adam. Work was not intended to be hard or oppressive. It was because of sin that work is harsh (Genesis 3:17-19). Because of Jesus, work can again be restful and joyful. If you work with Him; do only what He plans for you, each day can be a day of celebration and worship as He uses you for His purposes.

Embrace the rest Jesus offers. Pursue only His plan as your life and work has always been intended. Lead your community in celebration as you see God’s work being done.

SEPTEMBER 4 – LOCATING THE LEADERS

What naturally appears in the lives of those who are led by God’s Spirit is an uncommon love, joy, and peace. These people are very patient, kind, good, and faithful in their relationships with others. They have a gentle self-controlled manner that you can’t will yourself to have. It comes only to people who have allowed Jesus to change their desires (Galatians 5:22-23)
Another reason to carefully observe the behavior of your people is that you need leaders. Those who help you lead must be led of God’s Spirit to work in unity toward His plan for your people. Do you base your selection of leaders on these character traits? Do your subordinate leaders and managers share your vision and values? Are they leading your people where God wants them to go?
Just as clearly as he gave symptoms of self-centeredness and defiance of God and His rule, Paul has given the “symptoms” of good spiritual health and close relationship with the Holy Spirit. This calm, peaceful, patient demeanor that is marked by loyalty and a gentle, controlled goodness to other people – even when problems arise, is uncommon in the world. It will be easy to see for a person who is looking. These people may not have all the traditional characteristics society associates with leadership, but they have the ones that count in God’s economy.
Locate those among your people who are prepared to join you in the work and help you lead. Invest in them to help them learn to grow others.

SEPTEMBER 3 – DIAGNOSING THE DISEASE

Things people do showing they base life on their own, selfish desires are obvious to everyone. They are sexually immoral, whether private or public, are shameless in lewd behavior. Further, they conform, pursuing idols and other spirits. They show their hatred, combativeness, and jealousies in ways that lead them and others to extreme anger. Dividing people, leading them to part emotionally, and even separate permanently. Those who live with discontent or drunken or uncontrolled behavior will not share in God’s kingdom. (Galatians 5:19-20)
As you lead your people, you must carefully observe issues of character if you will lead them well. Often, you may have layers of systems and processes to insure quality, limit risk, and protect resources. What are you doing to identify and address problems of character?

Paul knew that God’s prosperity comes only when people pursue life on God’s terms. He observed the behavior of men and women, and over time had come to see patterns. These basic human patterns are still evident today. If you see people who have no shame, who seem to be angry or selfish, and whose lives are spinning out of control, they are not pursuing God’s will for their lives. These actions lead to destruction for them and for the other people around them. They will infect others if left unaddressed. But, if you look, you will see these symptoms.

Invest in people. Help them find their way.

JULY 24 – TRANSFORMED OR TERRORIZED?

So, therefore, if you are a master, give each of your servants what he or she needs to live in this reality; God’s rule. Stop your threats. Only the Lord, God is truly their master as He is yours. He doesn’t see you as superior to another because of your earthly status. (Ephesians 6:9)

Remember, your role in life is to live in close, loving, devoted relationship with the Lord, and to love your people in a way that helps each of them to find that transforming relationship. You can’t make a rule or threaten a consequence in a way that will lead to real transformation. In such an environment of regulation, fear is the result, and that fear motivates only the body. The heart, filled with terror, begins to focus on self-preservation and escape; not a great breeding ground for prosperity and transformed lives.

Paul here is really talking about trust. He encourages the reader to trust God when He says that God will prevail, expects only obedience from you, and that He has a plan for each of your people’s lives as well. Paul also is encouraging you, as a leader, to trust your people; to recognize that each of them – if they submit to God’s plan – can fulfill God’s role for them in your community. Each one can achieve without your constant intervention.

Trust God enough not to terrorize your people.

JULY 17 - … RESPECTING THEM TOO

So, I encourage you to fear the Lord, God, to serve only Him, and to put away every other pursuit. But, if that doesn’t make sense to you, choose to serve who or what you will, but for me; for my family, we serve the Lord God. (Joshua 24:14-15)

Have you ever considered that genuine respect for another person includes that you must allow them to be wrong? If so, you may have also realized that your role is never to ‘fix’ that person, fight their battles, nor otherwise to take God’s place in their life. Your appropriate role is limited to what the Holy Spirit leads you to say or do.

Joshua must have recognized these truths. In this, his final address to his people, he made clear to them the truth as he understood and lived it personally. Joshua’s Lord defeated all the gods worshipped by the Egyptians. He had driven out all those who had been conquered there in the new land. The evidence was compelling, but still – Joshua respected the people he led enough to acknowledge their authority to make their own decisions. To the end, the great warrior and leader refused to feel entitled to treat them as subjects.

Be creative, charming, and persuasive; even be passionate as God leads you to encourage your people. But, be respect them always. It’s their call.

JULY 16 – IDENTIFYING WITH THEM…

The reason the Father does love me is that I give my life; lay it down, and then finish the work before taking it up again. Not as a victim, nor a martyr, I do it willingly. The Father gave me this work, and the authority to do it. (John 10: 17-18)

You have been given a work to do. The Lord either has or He will, show you that work as you follow Him and ask for Him to show you. Just like Jesus, your work will be to serve your people; the people the Father has created you to serve. Will you use the power and authority that God gives you to do that work? Will you focus on; even identify with your people and their need so that you will finish well?

Jesus bewildered those listening to Him. It was confusing and unexpected enough for Him to say He would willingly die. But, there have been other martyrs. Jesus made clear that He had great power and authority. This death would be His own decision, and further, His death would be temporary. This was more than the religious listeners could handle. The work that the Father has for you is the same. Can you believe it? He is calling you to willingly lay down your life. Like Jesus, you must do it willingly, identifying with your people’s need.

Embrace the temporary death God calls you to. Lay down your life for your people.

JULY 2 – AUTHORITY TO RELEASE

Want to really please God? Don’t kid yourself with religious talk. That’s not what does it. The worship God wants is to see you take care of the broken and powerless; orphans, widows, and such, and watch yourself to stay true in the little stuff. (James 1:26-27)

Can you even remember the stress of feeling powerless? Or have you become accustomed to the bigger problems of authority and influence; the burdens you carry as a leader? It is hard to be poor, sick, or alone. It is stressful to feel like you have no control over what is happening to you. It can affect your health, your ability to contribute to society, and it can eliminate all your hope for the future.

The writer here explains that God gives you strength and influence to look around each day and see who needs help. Your work – your worship – is to help that person He places in your view, as He shows you their need. Your love and help bring His hope for a future. Your simple act of obedience may enable that person to overcome the threats that overwhelm them, so they too can begin to help others and please God.

You hold the key to the chains of hardship that bind others. That key is simple, prayerful, obedient worship. Unlock someone today!

JUNE 19 – NO AGENDA

Take the work I give you, and learn the way I will show you to do that work. Like me, you will find the right way that has been prepared just for you if you accept the timeless wisdom of God’s way to good life. In that life you will find real rest. (Matthew 11:29)

Can you really submit to Jesus as He asks? Not only by exception – in the moment where you are motivated to do some act of mercy, or choose a moral option. Jesus is talking about an ongoing, daily relationship that will go to the office with you. He will show you what to do, and how to do it all day at work, as you lead your people. He will set the priorities of your life down to the details. Are you ready for that?

With this offer, Jesus may have been thinking of God’s word to Israel through Jeremiah (6:16), where the prophet challenged the Israelites to choose one of the two paths at the crossroads of life, God’s way or not God’s way. He promised that, in God’s good way, they would find real rest for their souls.

Always, in every situation, decision, plan, and attitude of life, there are the same two choices. Like Jesus, choose God’s good way, and find His rest and peace.

JUNE 16 – DO WHAT?

Because I came down from the heavens to do only one thing – the will of the One who sent me – not to do what I want to do. (John 6:38)

Are you here to do just one thing? Did God create you to lead an organization? Is your purpose to be successful in creating and achieving aggressive business goals; to make a mark on your industry. Are you to impact your culture at large? What is your one thing to do?

Jesus said, “My one thing is worship.” He would do what pleases the Lord God. He would consider it to be His work, His life, and His entire focus for life. Nothing is ever more important nor urgent than simply doing the Father God’s will. When you consider the nature of a vision statement, it is a visualization of what will happen in the future. This statement is Jesus’ vision statement. He was more concerned with attitude, relationship, and obedience than busy activity, goals, and objectives. Consider as you lead you people whether you talk about what the Lord wants rather than what you want. Consider – do you want to bring glory and honor (worship) to Him, or make your mark in the world?

Communicate your vision in a way that leads your people to a relationship of community, and be sure that community understands your one thing.

MAY 28 – WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Then, James and John’s mother approached Jesus. She knelt and asked if he might grant her a favor. Jesus asked her simply, “What do you want?” (Matthew 20:20-21)

Do you ask your people what they want? In a world of expert studies and polling data, customer service indices, and trade publications you may think you know what they want. However, if you ask them - seriously – and give them time to think, you may be surprised. You may get a real and thoughtful answer.

Jesus often asked this question in one form or another. It was more to make the other person think than to get their answer. This question makes the responder consider, “What is important?” When your people have an opportunity to tell you what they really want, and they have time to carefully think about it, and they believe you will listen and care, they will be serious. The answer will then help you – and the process will help them more. One of the greatest ways to show love for another is to be concerned for their deepest desires.

Invest the time and energy to ask your people, “What do you want?”

MAY 16 – THE MAIN IDEA

He (God) wants everyone to be saved; to know the truth that there is only one God, and one way to Him – Jesus Christ. He surrendered His life so that all people could have life. This, just this, is why I was called by the Lord – to tell this good news to those who haven’t heard. (1 Timothy 2:5-7)

What do you communicate to the people around you? Do you have a clear understanding of why you are where you are, and of the purpose of the work that you are doing?

Paul obviously knows exactly why he is there, and what he is to do, and he repeats this message many times over – especially to young leaders he prepares for their work. People often dwell on exceptions. The urge, particularly with people who know a subject well, is to communicate about failures or special, extraordinary events rather than the basic, main idea. Many of your people may lack understanding of the very important purpose that is the reason for the work. If so, they will not process your messages about the exceptions in the way you intend. They need to frequently hear about purpose, vision, and values. Communicate that message clearly, so they can understand. Context matters if you are to empower your people to represent you.
Know your main things. Talk about them often. Your people need this.

APRIL 26 – BRING HIM TO ME

And many told (blind Bartimeus) to be quiet, but he yelled louder, “Son of David – have mercy on me! Jesus stopped and told them to bring Bartimeus to Him. So, they called him, “Be courageous and get up. Jesus is calling you.” (Mark 10:48-49)

Jesus and his disciples were headed for Jerusalem; busy and serious on their way. Bartimeus, the blind man on the side of the road, could not be indulged thought the disciples. Jesus doesn’t have time for him right now. They tried to silence Bartimeus, so that he would not get in the way. But Jesus seized the moment He helped them re-think their job description. He told them to go and bring the sick (physically, mentally, spiritually) to Him so He could make them whole.

Do you get too busy to see the sick person standing in front of you? Is your work too important to stop and bring them to Jesus? Every day brings opportunity to find the people who need Christ. Your work is not to fix them, nor necessarily to please them. It certainly is not to overlook them as a casualty of a busy day. Your work is to bring them to the Lord.
Look around you today. Somewhere, the Holy Spirit will show you your Bartimeus. Go to him or her and bring that sick person to Jesus.

APRIL 25 – WORK

Shine your light on your work for your servants, so it will show your glory to the children. Let the beauty of the Lord rest upon us as you establish your work for our hands. Yes, our work. You establish our work. (Psalm 90:16-17)

Do you love your work? Do you eagerly look forward to beginning each day? Why not? God formed you with purpose for the work He intended for you. Listen for His voice that is calling you to that work. If you do this, you will find work that you will love.

Your best life’s work is to be a part of the mission of God in His world and to His people. So, this request to “shine your light on your work” asks the Lord to reveal your mission. This is the way to find your work. Only then, is it possible to have the Glory of God rest upon you as you do it. He will guide your hands and feet, and speak through you. This relationship with God is where you will find the easy burden and the light load that Jesus promised (Matthew 11:30). Your job is to lead, but if you are to lead well, the Lord must establish the daily details of your job description. Sometimes, He will do this in surprising and unconventional ways, and sometimes you won’t understand. But, you can be certain of God’s presence and provision if you obey.

Let God establish your work, and enjoy Him each day as you bring Him glory in it!

APRIL 24 – WORSHIP

God is Spirit. Those who worship Him must worship in their spirit – their very core being, and in the truth of who He is, and who He made and called us to be. (John 4:24)

Can your people be led to worship – even before they come to know Jesus? Can they act their way toward the Lord and His truth?

Jesus says that you must worship both in spirit and in truth. So, to engage in real worship that brings glory to God and joy to your life, you must have experienced the birth of God’s Spirit in you. Then, the truth of who Jesus is can be lived out in your words and actions as you are animated by the Holy Spirit who lives in you. Those whom you lead; over whom you have influence, can engage in those actions with you. As they do, experiencing the change they see happening and hearing your story of the Hope in Christ that motivates you, they will be encouraged. As time and your consistency proves your Hope is trustworthy and real, some of these people will begin to have hope as well; hope that can be the basis of their faith and trust in the Lord.

Remember, worship is what makes the church, not the place where people meet. Lead your people to worship in Spirit and in Truth in every place you meet with them.

APRIL 23 – THE FAMILY

Jesus asked, “Who is my family?” Then, He looked around the circle of followers who were seated before Him, and said, “Here is my family. The one who does the will of God is my family.” (Mark 3:33-35)
Who is your work family? Who are the people closest to you; whom you trust, and to whom you give authority? As you clearly communicate the vision God has given you, and you share and define the values that are vital to that plan, this family will grow. Those whom Jesus sends to you will be added to the family. They may not be who you want. Some people whom you want to be a part may choose not to follow the way God has provided, and losing your close, working relationship with those people may become a cost of following the Lord’s vision.
Jesus said these words while his mother and other family members stood outside the place where He was teaching. It is thought they probably wanted to warn Him of the dangers of His harsh words to the religious leaders. They likely feared for His safety – and theirs. Some of your people will decide not to do what they need to do. Some of them will leave; and some may choose to stay and oppose the work, even if their words say they agree. Jesus said, “Those who do the will of God.” He did not say, “Those who know this will, and can recite it.”
Be alert. Watch to determine whose actions show they are your family. Rely upon the Holy Spirit guide your decisions.
